Janet Jackson’s Yorkshire B&B by Becky Papworth

Synopsis

Janet Jackson’s Yorkshire B&B

Yorkshire lass and dental receptionist Janet Jackson has just taken a big risk. Using all her savings, she’s turned her spacious garage into a Bed and Breakfast, slapped a sign on it and without any experience at all, is now awaiting her very first guests.

With a moody teenage daughter and a crazy sister to contend with she’s already got her work cut out. The trouble she soon discovers, is that guests have undesirable habits, annoying pets and endless demands. ‘Is it bloody worth it?’ she asks herself a dozen times a day. Janet gradually learns her trade – but not without being tested to her limits. The question is: will she come through the experience with her bank balance, cottage and her sanity intact?

Hugely entertaining but a word of warning: if ever you’ve thought of running a B&B, read this hilarious debut novel first– you might want to think again!

Review

This is such a wonderful story, witty, emotional, clever and such great humour. Janet’s life is chaotic to say the least, but she is such a fun character whilst dealing with a teenage daughter, she is also running a B&B and dealing with the fabulous Maureen.

I really loved the diary style, I think it makes such a difference abd emphasises the B&B process/lifestyle and major changes and work involved. I loved how diverse her characters are , the guests could have been simple and non dimensional. But Becky has put great depth into her characters. I loved the inclusion of trouble with neighbours and planning permission too, but most of all I enjoyed Janet’s optimism and her kindness.

Overall, this is a great read, it’s such a fun read, but also full of depth and fantastic observations, it feels like a study of human behaviour in addition to being an intelligent , funny, emotional and hope filled story.

Thanks to Rachel’s Rabdom Resources and Becky Papworth for a gifted copy in exchange for an honest review, all opinions are my own and freely given.
